What is SEO? and What Skills Are Crucial for SEO?
The most often asked question regarding Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is - “What Skills Are Crucial for SEO?” Before answering this question let me start with the question - “What is SEO?”.
What is SEO?
Basically Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques can be grouped into two major heads. They are, the On-Page factors and the Off-Page factors.
The On-Page factors mainly include the
(a) focused content, because content is the king,
(b) relevant and focused Keywords for the market and the
(c) usability & navigation.
The Off-Page factors mainly include the
(a) Inbound Links, through submissions and external references to our sites,
(b) nature of the market and its current trend and
(c) the progress & efforts from the Competitors.

What Skills Are Crucial for SEO?
Now coming back to the question - What skills are crucial for SEO? Based on the above context the following are the key skills, which are crucial for SEO.
(1) Technical Knowledge: More than the web development knowledge, the knowledge of one’s own market and the major competitors are the key. Once a person is very good in this, then, the identification of the core keywords to focus is a cakewalk.
(2) Public Relationship: In order to create both quality and a good number of IBL (inbound links), the Public Relations skill is very important. One has to know the various related forums and submission site and slowly build relationship and goodwill from its users.
(3) Empathetic: To the usability and the navigation of the site, one has to be empathetic i.e., thinking from user’s point of view.
(4) Consistency and Persistency: This is the most important of all the skills. SEO is not a sprint race, but a Marathon i.e., a continual on going process. So one has to do all the above both consistently and persistently. No matter how good a person is with respect to the above skills, but not being consistent and persistent, the whole thing goes for a toss.
Hope the above answers gave some perspective on the basics of SEO and the Skill, which are crucial for SEO.

Link Building Vs Brand Building
Is Link Building effective or the Brand Building? one of the often asked question.
Through Link Building, we provide hyperlinks from many web pages to our website. As a result, we increase our presence in the web and in turn, increase the possibilities of more strangers visiting our site. Link Building is typically done through site submissions, active participation in the public forums, blogs etc., Link Building helps in bringing more strangers to your website and it does not guarantees their satisfaction.
Turning the strangers into friends and eventually to customers is done by Brand Building exercise. By Brand Building activities, we increase our credibility, quality and reputation, which automatically increases the satisfaction of the users. Image Ads also helps in building the brand. As a result, users turn into customers. A brand is a symbolic embodiment of all the information connected to a company, product or service. A brand often includes an explicit logo, fonts, color schemes, symbols, which may be developed to represent implicit values, ideas, and even personality. Brand Building helps in retaining the customer base into loyalty customers.
Both go hand in hand and they compliment each other.

iPhones - Smart Phone and the ‘real’ Reality Acquisition Devices
Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple Computers on Tuesday (9th Jan 2007) at Macworld in SanFransisco gave a keynote presentation. With his own style and grace, Steve rendered a class presentation. First he presented the updates from various quarters of Apple Computers Inc. Then he launched the iTV, which is now called as Apple TV.
Steve mentioned that he had been waiting for this day for almost 3 years. And he announced the launch of 3 devices,
a) iPod, a device with a wide screen for playing video
b) Phone, which is real smart with visual voice mail etc.,
c) Internet Communicator, which provides the real browsing and emailing experience
Then he surprised all the 4000 + audience by saying that all the 3 devices is introduced as one gadget - iPhone. He mentioned how Apple had revolutionized the user interface device with it’s mouse and click wheel in the past. And for the iPhone, Apple is introducing an innovative and advanced multi-touch technology, which uses our finger as the pointing device. The pinch technique to zoom an image in the screen is awesome, a real cool feature. You could actually say - “the world is at your finger tips”.
The iPhone is a sleek device, which is 11.6 mm thick with a 3.5″ color display of 160 ppi. It has 2 Mega pixels Camera. iPhone is loaded with the OS X and it has a full-fledged Safari web browser. The device supports Quad Band GSM + EDGE and it’s wifi enabled with Bluetooth 2.0 interface. The device supports Rich HTML emailing, both iMap and POP3. In between, Steve mentioned, by the invent of the iPhone “Internet in your pocket” and in another instance he quoted “Life in pocket”, which were really appropriate. He also mentioned that Apple has reinvented itself periodically by the introduction of Mac in 1984, iPod in 2001 and iPhone now in 2007.
Steve gave an online demo of all the features, which demonstrated all the capabilities of the device. The device costs a modest $499 for a 4GB device. In US the iPhones would come to the market by June 2007. And for Europe, it would be made available by the last quarter of 2007 and for Asian market it would be available on 2008. The company wanted to capture a modest 1% market share of the whole mobile phones market, which are roughly about 10 million devices.
Three months ago I blogged about - Reality Acquisition Devices would replace PCs. When I wrote, the Mobile devices were far away from being a smart phone and also they were not easy to use. But iPhones have set very high standards to its competitor’s way ahead (about 5 years ahead). And iPhone from Apple Inc. is the real smart phone. Definitely the invention of iPhone is a major technology break through and a milestone in both the mobile industry and the computer industry.

Does AdSense pay you right?
Among the Internet users, Google AdSense is most widely used affiliate program. The simple implementation procedures, it’s ultra fast ads delivery mechanism and it’s cool monitoring & reporting interface are it’s advantages over it’s rivals. Though this fascinates the users initially, what counts ultimately is the money ($$) one gets out of this partnership.
Nowadays, it’s been widely felt that the mechanism by which the AdSense users are paid is unjustified. Though Google claims that it has a fair system to calculate the AdSense revenue based on one’s online popularity and relevance, still advertising community is not convinced. Here is one famous example where there is a disproportion between Guy Kawasaki’s blog traffic and money he earned through his AdSense program. From this, it looks like; Google holds a majority of the money charged from their Adwords users (in spite of their popularity). Unlike the other Advertising channels, due to it’s huge network Google is able to churn out good traffic to the Adwords publishers. Hence it’s difficult for the Advertising community to validate this point.
With more competition from MSN, Yahoo and other effective online Advertising Channels, let us hope that the Google Adwords system is either challenged or at least validated!
