iPhones - Smart Phone and the ‘real’ Reality Acquisition Devices

Steve Jobs, CEO, Apple Computers on Tuesday (9th Jan 2007) at Macworld in SanFransisco gave a keynote presentation. With his own style and grace, Steve rendered a class presentation. First he presented the updates from various quarters of Apple Computers Inc. Then he launched the iTV, which is now called as Apple TV.

Steve mentioned that he had been waiting for this day for almost 3 years. And he announced the launch of 3 devices,

a) iPod, a device with a wide screen for playing video
b) Phone, which is real smart with visual voice mail etc.,
c) Internet Communicator, which provides the real browsing and emailing experience

Then he surprised all the 4000 + audience by saying that all the 3 devices is introduced as one gadget - iPhone. He mentioned how Apple had revolutionized the user interface device with it’s mouse and click wheel in the past. And for the iPhone, Apple is introducing an innovative and advanced multi-touch technology, which uses our finger as the pointing device. The pinch technique to zoom an image in the screen is awesome, a real cool feature. You could actually say - “the world is at your finger tips”.

iPhone

The iPhone is a sleek device, which is 11.6 mm thick with a 3.5″ color display of 160 ppi. It has 2 Mega pixels Camera. iPhone is loaded with the OS X and it has a full-fledged Safari web browser. The device supports Quad Band GSM + EDGE and it’s wifi enabled with Bluetooth 2.0 interface. The device supports Rich HTML emailing, both iMap and POP3. In between, Steve mentioned, by the invent of the iPhone “Internet in your pocket” and in another instance he quoted “Life in pocket”, which were really appropriate. He also mentioned that Apple has reinvented itself periodically by the introduction of Mac in 1984, iPod in 2001 and iPhone now in 2007.

Steve gave an online demo of all the features, which demonstrated all the capabilities of the device. The device costs a modest $499 for a 4GB device. In US the iPhones would come to the market by June 2007. And for Europe, it would be made available by the last quarter of 2007 and for Asian market it would be available on 2008. The company wanted to capture a modest 1% market share of the whole mobile phones market, which are roughly about 10 million devices.

Three months ago I blogged about - Reality Acquisition Devices would replace PCs. When I wrote, the Mobile devices were far away from being a smart phone and also they were not easy to use. But iPhones have set very high standards to its competitor’s way ahead (about 5 years ahead). And iPhone from Apple Inc. is the real smart phone. Definitely the invention of iPhone is a major technology break through and a milestone in both the mobile industry and the computer industry.
